There were not many golf courses in the Yorkshire pit village where Michael Parkinson grew up.In fact, there were none - and about the same number of people played the game. When Michael was thirteen, his father, John William Parkinson, became the first Parkinson to step onto a golf course. It was of the municipal variety in a field near Barnsley and he took Michael along to carry the bag of clubs he had hired for the day. Standing on the first tee,Parkinson Senior instructed Parkinson Junior to pass him a club, whereupon, reaching into the bag and pulling out what came to hand, the young lad gave his father a seven-pound hammer - how it got there remains a mystery. But being ignorant of the ways of golf and not wishing to make a fuss Parkinson pere, employing a bowed and crouched stance which reminded Parkinson films of Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, used the hammer to drive one handed from the tee.Severly traumatised by the spectacle of his father doing an imitation of Charles Laughton, young Parkinson developed a phobia about golf.In his twenties and thrities,Michael Parkinson became founder member and president of the Anti-Golf Society. But by his mid-forties he had been persuaded to take up the game by his wife, the saintly Mary Parkinson,a woman of great common sense, and the most dangerous eighteen-handicap golfer in captivity.Since his conversion Michael Parkinson has worked hard at unravelling the mysteries of the game by talking to and playing with such experts as Nick Faldo,Gary Player and Laura Davies; not to mention Bernard Gallacher and David Leadbetter; and not forgetting Gary Lineker and Alistair Cooke. Here he recalls these experiences with sketches of his subjects that tell us much about the world of golf itself - all recounted with that infectious sense of humour and eye for the absurd. On holiday or relaxing after eighteen holes, this is a book that will hold the attention, make you laugh, and,at a push, may even improve your game. Since April 2013,again in March 2015,and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template, altering it's prices, weight allowances, dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
