Description:
xxxix+289 pages. Octavo (9 " x 6 ¾ ") bound in full leather with black and red spine labels on raised bands and gilt lettering. From the library of George M Foster. Reprint.Juan Bautista (de) Pomar (c. 1535 – 1590) was an historian and writer interested in pre-Columbian Aztec history. Based on references by Fray Juan de Torquemada, we can estimate that he was born in 1535 at Texcoco. He was the great grandson of Nezahualcoyotl, and was half-Spanish on his father's side. Considered noble by the Spaniards, he was able to obtain one of his great-grandfather's royal houses, known as the Netzahualcoyotl, in Texcoco. Pomar was raised as a Christian but learned Aztec tradition from his mother. He was bilingual and spoke and wrote in both Spanish and the native language of the Aztecs, Nahuatl. He is credited with one of the most important compilations of Nahuatl poetry, Romances de los señores de Nueva España. Pomar's major work includes an account of the Aztecs and Tlatelolcas Relación de Juan Bautista…

Ever since the Spanish Conquest, Mexico's most important industry has been mining, including in this general term the extraction of petroleum. At the end of the Colonial period, during one of the greatest eras of prosperity in the history of Mexican mining, the industry was organized as a guild, the Cuerpo de Mineria, which with its Tribunal General enjoyed a broad grant of authority from the King covering the fields of administrations, mining law, the financing of mines, and the education of mining engineers. In this work Walter Howe presents the first thorough study of the Mining Guild - how it was created, its history and what it contributed to mining industry and to the country as a whole.
Condition:
Corners bumped, light rubbing of extremities. Jacket lightly soiled; corners chipped; 1/4" chipped from spine head; page ends soiled, edge wear with some closed tears else a very good copy in about very good jacket.

Manuscript material from the collection of Joaquin Garcia Icazbalecta. 1st edition.Luis Garcia Pimentel took over his father collection upon his death. How many volumes of manuscripts his library contained cannot be said with any degree of certainty. All we know is that at the end of his life his library was one of the finest and richest of private collection in Mexico. A typewritten list prepared in 1937 by his grandson, Juoaquin, shows that the collection contained at least eighty-seven volumes of manuscripts, only sixty-nine of which were listed by Federico Gomez de Orozco in his catalog in 1927. xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined…
