Panormi [Palermo]: apud D. Cyllenium Hesperium, sumpt. Antonini Giardinae bibliopolae Panorm, 1685. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Monumenta omnia mathematica, quae extant, quorumque catalogum inuersa pagina demonstrat : ex traditione ... D. Francisci Maurolici ... opus præclarissimum, non priùs typis commissum [ed. J. S. Salva]. Folio (309x213 mm). [8], 296 pp., title page printed in red and black with large woodcut device, many woodcut diagrams in text, blanks present. Bound at the end are two excerpts (complete in itself) from Archimedes' Opera quae extant (edited by David Rivault, Paris: Claude Morel, 1615), in parallel Latin and Greek text with several woodcut ills. and diagrams: (1) Planorum Aequiponderantium, seu centra gravitatum planorum, pp. 145-218; (2) De insidentibus humido libri duo..., pp. 487-549 (1:blank). Near contemporary calf (rubbed and scuffed at extremities, but binding sound and strong), gilt spine with label, edges colored in red, silk marker present. Text somewhat browned throughout, some (mainly marginal) dampstaining, occational paper repairs to edges, p. 250 with small hole. Provenance: Willem Jacob 's Gravesande (1688-1742), Duch philosopher and mathematician (18C inscription to first page of first extract, reading "Gennete / Ex libris Domini s'Gravesande"). A nice copy of interesting provenance. ---- A paraphrase of Archimedes' works made between 1534 and 1550 by the Sicilian Francesco Maurlico (1494-1575) some of which was printed at Messina by Paolo Bonacota, 1670-72. This was never published but the sheets were acquired by Lorenzo di Tommaso and then confiscated by the Spanish authorities in 1678. Juan Siverstre Salva acquired 425 copies of the original edition (COPAC). The bound in extracts are form the second and influential 1615 Greek and Latin edition (DSB) of the works of Archimedes, valuable for its numerous woodcuts and diagrams (see Houzeau-L. 826; Riccardi I/1, 43; Cantor II, 659).

Description:
1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting ‘sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he put… Read More

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
