He was born at Ecton, Northamptonshire, England, on December 23, 1657, the son of Thomas Franklin, a blacksmith-farmer, and Jane White. Benjamin Franklin himself was known to visit Ecton. Thus one of the founding fathers of the United States had roots in Ecton. Franklin himself wrote, "The notes one of my uncles (who had the same kind of curiosity in collecting family anecdotes) once put into my hands, furnished me with several particulars relating to our ancestors. From these notes I learned that the family had lived in the same village, Ecton, in Northamptonshire, for three hundred years . . . is eldest son Thomas lived in the house at Ecton, and left it with the land to his only child, a daughter, who, with her husband, one Fisher, of Wellingborough, sold it to Mr. Isted, now lord of the manor there." - Franklin’s autobiography.

The map depicts a camp with symbols of canons, along Fox Creek and Little Fox River. Notation on verso "Plan of Camp May 9, 1779." On left corner: "Hedq [Headquarters] of God____." There are a few possible locations based on the name Little Fox River, but perhaps the most likely seems to be in what was then referred to as the Northwest Territory, in present day Illinois, some 58 miles south of Vincennes, because there are recorded military activities in the area in the timeframe. In December 1778 the British took Ft. Sackville, in Vincennes on the Wabash River along the border of present day Illinois and Indiana. Then in February 1779 American forces under George Rogers Clark retook the fort, re-naming it Ft. Patrick Henry. "In… Read More

Antonio Franco's work, as a history of the Society in that era, was typical among others in extolling those fellow Jesuits who died as martyrs during, or on their way to, missions in Brazil. Perhaps viewed now as a glorified euro-centric perspective, the work nonetheless features in the important Bibliographia Brasiliana by Borba de Moraes [1.318]. It also deals with the formation structure of the novitiate of the Jesuit school at Évora (Portugal), which became a model for many other Schools in Portugal, Brazil and island territories.
Father António Franco reveals a historical and critical consciousness at a time when hagiography (literary genre in which include his edifying lives) begins to assert itself as a critical science. The study also proposes a reading of Imagem da virtudeIn the context of spiritual… Read More

Description:
1756 AMERICA 1ed Political Affairs in Colonies Commerce & Trade Saintard RARE
"Roman Politique Sur l'etat Present des Affaires de l'Amerique" is a rare, 18th-century treatise on the political influence of European powers in America. Written by Pierre Saintard, this book discusses the role of the American colonies in establishing and continuing trade with Europe, as well as discussing the amount of power that should be given to the colonies. Per the JFBL,
"A consideration of Europe's involvement in North America with a view to establishing a balance of power among the colonizing nations which would eliminate war and encourage commerce."
It should be noted, the dating on this work is a bit ambiguous. According to multiple sources, this work was published in 1756 with the title page being a cancel – a crudely added "I" to the dating to make it read 1757.
