Over 1 lb. of various music scores, i.e. Big Band arrangements, some printed and others handwritten and SIGNED by Big Band Leader JAN SAVITT. In varying condition. Some items signed in fountain pen, others in pencil. Many musical notations in Savitt's hand added to the scores. I have no way of knowing if any of these are complete scores, so it's probably best to consider all of the titles as fragments. Titles are: "Park Avenue Fantasy", "Negro Spirituals: Go Down Moses - Swing Low, Sweet Chariot", "Valse" (Brahms), and "Paganini"..

Some of the titles are: Le vin et les femmes; Le parachute; Les miracles du jour; la discrétion etc. etc. A charming and neatly written manuscript.

A travesty of "La Marseillaise" in that the position of Blackmar's name on the first page indicates that Blackmar is the composer. Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle composed "La Marseillaise," originally called "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin," in 1792. Perhaps the title page, which indicates that the music in hand is an arrangement by Ferdinand Beyer of the French song, serves to cover up the interior title, "The Southern Marseillaise." After all, "The Bonnie Blue Flag" a Blackmur publication, was so popular that after New Orleans was captured by Butler in 1862 "he threatened to fine every man, woman or child who sang, whistled, or played it on any instrument, $25.00. He arrested and jailed A. E. Blackmar, fined him $500.00, and had his troops destroy the plates and printed music."—Powell. A travesty? All over, a very nice impression. Inscribed by Copland in 1953 in Providence, Rhode Island, to Millard Thomson, a composer and professor at Brown. Thomson's bookplate opposite inscription. The book preserves the six Charles Eliot Norton Lectures delivered at Harvard University in May 1952 substantially as they were given. The first three lectures treat the musical mind as listener, interpreter, or creator; the remaining three discuss "the imaginative mind in the music of Europe and America."
