About This Item

BOSTON: Houghton, Mifflin and Company. Fine with no dust jacket. 1918. Hardcover. Salesman's dummy preceding publication without month of publication (October, 1918) absent on copyright page. Year of publication present at base of title page. One of W. T. Benda's illustrations appears opposite title page with tissue guard, unlike the order followed in the published book. The brown cloth covers are the same with orange titles, but the spine is blank. Tipped to the front paste-down and end-paper are salesman's specs for purposes of advancing orders. 12 pages of text and only 3 of the illustrations are present. The rest consists of blank pages. A preliminary page opposite title has been excised to accommodate the illustration and tissue guard. The copy is fine, replete with modifications required, without dust jacket. A remarkablly scarce advance of the author's finest work. ; 5 1/4" X 7 1/2" .

Synopsis

My Ántonia (first published 1918) is considered one of the greatest novels by American writer Willa Cather. My Ántonia , pronounced with the accent on the first syllable of "Ántonia," is the final book of the "prairie trilogy" of novels by Cather, a list that also includes O Pioneers! and The Song of the Lark .  My Ántonia follows an orphaned boy, Jim, and a Bohemian immigrant child, Ántonia, upon their introduction to Nebraska as pioneers. The novel depicts the struggles and successes of the pair throughout their lifetime. The first edition of My Ántonia in 1918 opened with an introduction depicting a conversation on a train that was later cut from the novel in a revised 1926 edition by Houghton Mifflin
