Paris: Emile Rondeau Libraire, 1890. Leather Bound. Second Edition: xvii, 390, errata leaf, 494p., rubricated titlepage, text thick with hundreds of devices reproduced in vignette impressions (struck expertly in deep black), matching 11x7 inch hardbound volumes t.e.g in half morocco (executed by Zaehnsdorf) over marbled boards, with marbled endsheets of a different pattern. Third blank of v.1 bears a presentation signed by the author. A strongly-bound pair with just a little abrasion to corner-tips, to spine rims (which appear to have been lightly sophisticated; i.e., a touch of red to abrasions) and (nearly undetectably) to raised bands. Lower tips of v.2 also a little snagged.. The most noticible flaws are (firstly) areas of foxing to marbling of covers, to gutters and foredges of blanks, and (secondly) sprinkles of soil (or snuff?) scattered throughout blank gutters and occasional text. Still one of the most useful studies of armorial bindings with hundreds of illustrations of clearly struck designs. Including special sections on French and foreign royalty, eccleasiastics, and women collectors.
