The author, Dmitrii Dubenskii (1858-1923) was a Russian Major General, military writer, and publisher, who published this study abut the Caucasian wars under a pseudonym. The account is based both on his personal experiences and eyewitness accounts and covers the period from the initial Russian conquest of the Caucasus beginning in 1800 (the "heroic era" of conquest according to the author), to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. With numerous illustrations taken from contemporary publications and works by painters such as Kozlov. The author's true identity is based on a copy held by the Russian State Library.
