About This Item

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., Limited,, 1900. Shackleton's only pre-exploration publication First edition, first impression, of Shackleton's first book, which he self-published and co-wrote with the ship's surgeon McLean, containing a detailed record of daily activities and a list of all the men on board. During this cruise, Shackleton met Cedric Longstaff, the son of Llewellyn W. Longstaff. The latter pledged £25,000 to Markham's scheme for a British expedition to Antarctica. It was on the recommendation of Llewellyn's son, Lieutenant Cedric Longstaff, that Shackleton was made the third officer for the Discovery Expedition. The arguably poor assembling of this book, printed on adhesion-prone art paper and wire-stitched into paper-covered boards, can make it difficult to find in collectable condition. Foolscap quarto. Original pictorial paper-covered boards, sometime rebacked with black cloth backstrip, front cover lettered in black and white. Photographic frontispiece, further photographs throughout text, title page printed in red and black. Ink stamps of one J. Walker to verso of frontispiece. Minor wear to spine and edges, staining to covers, occasional neat repairs largely to spine, inner hinge cracked, contents with signs of handling. A good copy of a fragile book. Hackett, p. 169, illustrated at p. 69; SABIB III, p. 218.
