About This Item

[N.p., but likely Little Rock, Ar, 1920. Very good.. Albumen photograph, 7.75 x 9.25 inches, matted and framed. Minor surface wear to photograph. Short tear to mat at bottom right. Frame backed in renewed paper, but preserving most of the original framer's label from "W.H. Bray Co., 702 Main Street, Little Rock, Ar." A striking image featuring twenty members of an African-American men's choral group and their accompanists, all dressed in suit and tie, standing in three rows on the curb of a brick street, just in front of a large Victorian clapboard house. Four members of the group, at left, stand with their instruments - an upright bass, xylophone, clarinet, and violin, with another member at center holding a conductor's baton. The framer of the photograph, W.H. Bray of Little Rock, was active in the city through the end of the 1920s. A rather distinguished group of musicians forever memorialized in a well-composed image. An excellent display piece.
