New York: The Macmillan Company, 1898. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. 2 vol. Small 8vo. [4], v-x, [2], 383, [1]; [4], v, [2], 384-744, [4] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Maroon cloth with gold rules and lettering on the front boards and the spines. A beautiful set of Zola's last installment in "Les Trois Villes", a series chronicling society, religion, and class tensions in Lourdes, Rome, and Paris, during the 19th century, one of the last works published before Zola's death. The first volume has a picture and an obituary of Emile Zola pasted on the front pastedown, and a contemporary date written on the free front endpaper, the top of the textblocks show small spots of soiling, and the rear pastedown of each has a small bookseller's tag.
