About This Item

n.p.: Patriot Party, 1970. Pinback Button. 1.75 inch pin, made by pasting a round piece of printed and crudely hand-colored paper with the People's Party logo (fists breaking chains) over a pre-existing pinback button. The underlying button is not possible to identify. The Patriot Party emerged from the Young Patriots Organization, which was founded in Chicago by poor whites of Appalachian background (often described as "hillbilly" gang members turned revolutionaries). Together with the Black Panthers, the Young Lords, and later with other groups, they were part of the original "Rainbow Coalition.
