Original cover to spine (now covered by paper) appears to be missing. Quarter leather and marble print cover has been covered at some point with brown paper which has caused some tanning to the fep. Pencilled price in fep along with two small tears. Inscription on pages preceding title page - this was a 1904 Christmas gift. 500 pages with black and white engravings, many full page engravings. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. Very rare 1923 First Edition 8vo size green clothbound hardcover, with gilt titles on spine and front cover; 266 deckle edged pages. Thomas Boyd (1898-1935) was a young United States Marine who served in France during World War I. After the war he became a journalist and later opened a bookstore in St. Paul, Minnesota. Other writers, including Sinclair Lewis, who came into his bookstore encouraged him to write about his own World War I experiences. Through the Wheat was Boyd's first novel. Protagonist William Hicks, like Boyd, is a young Marine serving in France. Submitted to Scribner's in 1922, Through the Wheat was rejected by editor Maxwell Perkins. According to prabook.com, "F. Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1857. Prose Writers of America was first published in 1847 (this is the 4th and last edition.) And was specifically designed to compete with a similar anthology by Cornelius Mathews and Evert Augustus Duyckinck. Editor/author Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an influential editor but less than civil and scrupulous, he outed Walt Whitman (although apparently it took one to know one) and is perhaps best remembered today for defaming Egdar Allan Poe, even becoming Poe's literary executor under less than ethical circumstances.
