This is a scarce, very early Charles Dickens book that was published when he was only 25 years old. "PUBLIC LIFE OF MR. TULRUMBLE, ONCE MAYOR OF MUDFOG" by Boz ("Boz" was the pen name of Dickens). 1837; Carey, Lea and Blanchard; Philadelphia. The book contains "Other Tales and Sketches, from Bentley's Miscellany, and the Library of Fiction" including a story by James Fenimore (spelled "Fennimore" on the contents page) Cooper titled "An Evening of Visits." There are 11 stories in all - please see the photos for the complete list of contents. This is one of the first stories by Dickens published in book form in the United States.Condition:Worn corners (the tips of the boards are exposed); 1/2" cloth tears at the top edge of the spine, small cloth tears at the bottom edge. This is a massive, custom three-quarter leather bound volume of 169 issues of "THE YOUTH'S COMPANION" newspaper/magazine from the 1850's. Although the label on the front cover states "1852-1855," one issue from 1850 is included. "A Family Paper, Devoted to Piety, Morality, Brotherly Love - No Sectarianism, No Controversy." The Youth's Companion was a weekly magazine/newspaper published by Nathaniel Willis in Boston from 1827 to 1929. Each issue contains 4 pages and features an engraving on the first page. First edition, second binding, of Pound's first major volume of criticism. This is an interesting association copy, with the ownership signature of Schuyler B. Jackson, dated "15/8/21." A total of 1250 sets of sheets were printed, of which three hundred sets were used for the American issue, and an unspecified number of copies were bound up in this slightly later binding. Also included is a card from Mayeur, with a handwritten note on it wishing the recipient best Christmas wishes for 1931. The plates are in perfect condition. Loose in gathers as issued.
