1544. Rara prima edizione italiana del 1544 della celebre opera spirituale del Frate Domenicano Predicatore Giacomo Savonarola (Ferrara 1452- Firenze 1498). Savonarola venne scomunicato da Papa Alessandro VI nel 1497 e bruciato sul rogo come "eretico scismatico per aver predicato cose nuove". Tutte le sue opere vennero inserite all'indice dei libri proibiti nel 1559 per essere riabilitate solo in seguito e sono ora considerati importanti testi di teologia. L'opera è una raccolta di 21 sermoni recitati in Italia nel 1494 e raccolti da Stefano da Codiponte. La reazione di Papa Alessandro VI a questi sermoni (apparsi per la prima volta in Italia in questa edizione), fu nel 1495 di proibire a Savonarola qualsiasi ulteriore predicazione. A questo provvedimento seguì la scomunica e la morte. "la importanza enorme di questa predicazione; se si consideri che fera esse sta la cacciata dei Medici, la ribellione di Pisa, l'entrata di Carlo VIII in Firenze, con tutti i pericoli e timori cui dette luogo, la riforma della Stato; e se si consideri ancora che il pulpito del Frate e la sua celletta di San Marco potersano ormai sulla cosa pubblica fiorentina non mono che gli scanni di Palazzo" (Conti/R., p. 47). Savonarola was excommunicated in 1497 by the Pope Alessandro VI and burned as an heretics "eretico scismatico per aver predicato cose nuove". All this works were put in the Index of Forbidden Books in 1559 to be requalified only after and are now considered important texts of theology. Under the stress of excommunication, Savonarola composed the present work, his most famous and influential, his spiritual masterpiece, essentially a celebration of the victory of the Cross over sin and death and an exploration of what it means to be a Christian The title woodcut shows Savonarola writing in his hermitage, a crucifix in front of him, an hourglass on a side desk and a number of books. This woodcut can also be found in other Venetian prints of his writings and is one of the most beautiful library representations of the woodcut era. The printer's signature at the end shows Justitia enthroned on a lion bench with sword and scales and the initials "AB" for Alexander de Bindoni. Single numbering. In good conditions.
