About This Item
London: South Hook Gas,, 2009. First edition, first impression, limited to 500 copies and inevitably rare, with just two locations among institutional libraries: SOAS and Virginia Commonwealth University, Qatar. This handsome photobook was published to commemorate the import of liquid natural gas into Great Britain by South Hook Gas, a UK-based joint venture formed by Qatar Petroleum and Exxon Mobil in 2004. The work shows Qatar before 1971, based on photographs researched and sourced from private and institutional collections by Thames & Hudson; the forewordsare by senior officials and executives, while the images are arranged into themes: sheikhs, aerial Views, "A New Era Arrives", street scenes, "People, Places and Traditions", landscapes, maritime, architecture and building, armed forces, and natural resources. Landscape quarto. Original black cloth, silver and debosseed lettering to spine and front cover, vivid red endpapers. With dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with colour and black & white plates from photographs, printed on high gloss paper; text in Arabic and English. Light signs of handling to jacket. A very good copy.
