About This Item
London: Andre Deutsch,, 1969. Second edition, first impression, of Rhys's debut novel, originally published as Postures in 1928. This copy has the typed address label of Olwyn Hughes, Rhys's literary agent, pasted to the front free endpaper, and may be a retained copy for distribution by Hughes to advertise her services. After the Second World War, Rhys lapsed into obscurity and her books fell out of print. This title was reissued following the success of her masterpiece, Wide Sargasso Sea, published in 1966. Hughes (1928-2016) and Rhys lived close to each other in north London, where they first struck up their professional relationship. Hughes gained a reputation as a fierce negotiator on behalf of her clients, and she managed the literary estate of Sylvia Plath and the work of her brother, Ted Hughes. Octavo. Original red boards, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. A very good copy, spine cocked and with faint vertical crease, light foxing to edges, in the dust jacket, rear panel toned and with a couple of small marks, else bright. Mellown A2c.
