Folio, contemporary red leather-backed boards, spine gilt in 6 compartments; all edges gilt; rubbed, foxing largely in the margins and backs of plates, 3 inch margin closed tear to page 247. Stuttgart: J. G. Cotta, [1846] FIRST ILLUSTRATED EDITION, FIRST ISSUE with the plate after page 44 depicting fox diving under a monk's habit, later suppressed. Kaulbach's sinister anthropomorphic animals illustrated Goethe's version of a 13th century allegory known in English as Reynard the Fox. Armorial book plate Frederich William Haigh. Binding solid .
