About This Item
London: Dickinson & Bros 114 New Bond Street, 1850. First printing. Portrait of the namesake of the Auckland New Zealand. George Eden was born in Beckenham, Kent, the second son of William Eden, 1st Baron Auckland. A lawyer by training, a politician representing Woodstock in 1810, first Lord of the Admiralty under Grey & Melbourne. He gave a commission to William Hobson to sail for the East Indies, which Hobson ultimately rewarded in the naming of his new town and future New Zealand capital city of Auckland in 1840. Mount Eden in Auckland, the town of Eden, New South Wales and Auckland County, New South Wales were also named after him. He was also the Governor-General of India, 1836-1842.
Lord Auckland died on New Year's Day 1849, following what was described as a fit.[Wikipedia]. He was aged 64. Lord Auckland was unmarried and on his death the earldom became extinct, while he was succeeded in the barony by his younger brother, Robert.
Perhaps this print was issued as a tribute to the recently deceased Earl. Lithograph, 12 1/2 x 21". Couple of closed small margin tears, one extending into the printer's line at the bottom.
