About This Item

A Unique Association copy of The Secret Garden, First Edition, First Print plus a Custom Clamshell Rare Book Box.

This is a rare combination. A first edition, first printing of the classic children's story written by Frances Hodgson Burnett with a magnificent, custom-made protective clamshell.

Of special interest - this is a unique association copy! The book has been signed "Valenza Heinemann From - Uncle Willie". This would suggest the book was originally given from the publisher - William Heinemann to a niece.

This book is in very good condition and has nice gold gilt work. Original boards and cloth. The spine has had professional repair. The original binding has been reinforced (re-backed), but in a way that preserves the original spine cloth and look. Some foxing on the interior front and back covers, end pages and along some page edges. All illustrations present. No additional markings from previous owners, aside from the inscription. No DJ. A well preserved copy.

As a bonus the book comes with a beautiful, custom-made clamshell rare book box. Elegant black nuba & fine green cloth, custom gilt-stamped titles to spine and dynamic gold stamped image of the little girl design on the side graphically inspired from the edition's iconic illustration. Finished in rich Black velour on the interior. A superb & unique protective clamshell.

Item will be shipped in additional protective packaging, so as to preserve both the book and clamshell.

More images can be provided if requested.

Synopsis

The Secret Garden, written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, has remained one of the most popular children’s books since its publication in The American Magazine in 1910. The story tells of childhood emotions and experiences while keeping the central theme - if something is cared for, it will thrive.  The Secret Garden  introduces us to a sour little girl, Mary Lennox, who is NOT a pleasure to be around. In fact, she yells like a little princess, can't make friends, and simply despises everything. She remains quite contrary until she helps her garden grow - and finds someone worse off than herself to bring along for the ride.  Burnett was a British American novelist and playwright, best known for her novels  Little Lord Fauntleroy , A Little Princess, and The Secret Garden . She regularly found inspiration through her observations of nature and the walled gardens at Maytham Hall in Kent England. The American Magazine published the first edition of The Secret Garden  in 1910
