London: Richard Bentley, 1837. [iii]-xv, [1], 331, [12] pp. Frontispiece & added engraved title with vignette illustration, both engraved by Greatbatch after Pickering. Bound in period calf rebacked with later calf, spine tooled in gilt, morocco lettering piece. Very Good with scratches to leather, corners showing, bookplate on paste down, very little foxing to contents.

An early reprinting of the 1833 edition of Jane Austen's classic novel, which was the first one-volume edition and first illustrated edition, with the frontispiece and added title. Includes a short biography of the author at the front.

Synopsis

Sense and Sensibility is a novel by the English novelist Jane Austen. Published in 1811, it was Austen's first published novel, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". The story revolves around Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances.
