About This Item

New York: Kiggins & Kellogg, 1859. Very good.. Second edition of this near-miniature patriotic tale as told by Revolutionary War veteran Uncle Ned, number 7 in the second REDFIELD'S TOY BOOK series. This short account of the history of the United States contains common colonial tropes that echo in education today, including the story of Columbus and racist concepts of native peoples. STORY OF THE FOURTH OF JULY shows the continuing effort to build an American mythology, using simplified narratives for younger generations to learn and carry on. 3.75'' x 2.25''. Original yellow pictorial wrappers, saddle-stitched. Three full-page woodblock illustrations with two smaller woodblock illustrations in text. 16 pages, with ads to rear wrapper. Wrappers with a bit of soiling and edgewear. Leaves with scattered soiling. A tight copy.
