"Esra" verstand sich als Forum zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit den Leistungen des offiziellen Zionismus.

Die Zeitschrift stand der 'Jüdischen Renaissance' nahe und zielte darauf, vor allem den assimilierten Kreisen des Westjudentums genuin jüdische, vornehmlich osteuropäische Kulturtraditionen zu vermitteln.

This article by Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was read before the Society on Nov. 16, 1832. Bache was the great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin and the grandson of Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Dallas. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he taught engineering there and became a second lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He was a professor of natural philosophy and chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1827 to 1843 and also served as the first president of Central High School of Philadelphia from 1839 to 1842. In 1843 he became superintendent of the United States Coast Survey, a position he held until his death. Two volumes bound in one, 12mo, pp (2), 212; (4), 288, lightly age-toned throughout with the occasional page with mild foxing, otherwise very sound internally, contemporary half calf and marbled boards, rubbed, slightly worn at the corners, rebacked at some point with a later calf spine. The Oates-Selborne copy, with the bookplate of Robert Washington Oates, the later presentation labels to the Gilbert White Museum in1955, and the tiny Bibliotecha Oatesiana stamp on the final page. With the earlier bookplate of the surgeon John Wheeley Gough Gutch. [A pirated edition, without illustrations. It seems scarce - I have only been able to trace two other copies from this publisher in libraries. It is curious that two printers seem to have been involved - H.
