About This Item
[Washington, D.C.]: (n.p.), 1868. First Edition. Pamphlet. Fine. A report on the cost of surveying land for "half-breeds" as called for in an 1865 treaty, which is reprinted in this pamphlet in full. The treaty between the Cheyenne and Arapaho people and the federal government called for specific named persons connected to the tribes be given individual sections of 640 acres in Kansas. Charles Mix, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs sends this message to Congress, "It is important that these treaty stipulations should be carried into effect without delay. The Union Pacific railway, eastern division, will probably pass through the reservation from which these sections are to be made, and if the lands are not previously patented to the half-breeds, trouble will probably arise..."
Much of this pamphlet is devoted to reprinting the treaty negotiated under President Andrew Johnson, "Treaty between the United States of America and the Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes of Indians
concluded October 14, 1865 : Ratification advised, with amendments, May 22, 1866 : Amendments accepted November 10 and 19, 1866 : Proclaimed February 2, 1867."
12 pages. 40th Congress, 2d Session. House of Representatives. Ex. Doc. No. 104. January 16, 1868. First edition (first printing). A fine copy consisting of sewn gatherings; never bound, entirely as issued.
