About This Item

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1931. First American edition of the first book in Ransome's wonderful series about a clan of sailing British children between the wars, who manage quite handily mostly without the adults around, thank you; camping, sailing, exploring, and doing some fine storytelling along the way. First printing, same date on title & copyright pages, no later printings noted - originally published in the UK a year earlier. Hardcover, full green cloth, black titling; in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, but some light water stains to the spine & small part of the bottom page edges, top margin of front cover darkened; jacket shows light waterstaining, mostly visible internally, a couple of short tears, one with a decent but not archival scotch tape mend to inside head of spine; externally, the jacket shows minor rubbing, light chipping, edges darkened, spine a bit darkened with minor scuffing & light creasing/cockling, minor silverfishing; book store ("The Book Shop") rubberstamp on free endsheet & half-title page; presents quite nicely. Text clean; 343 pages, map endsheets, title page & interior map in two colors, other fine line illustrations (mostly headpieces) by Helene Carter - Ransome started illustrating his books later in the series, and in later editions of this title his technically primitive but more atmospheric work replaces Carter's.. First American Edition. Cloth. Good/Good. Illus. by Helene Carter. 5¾" by 8¼".

Synopsis

Swallows and Amazons is the first book in the Swallows and Amazons series by Arthur Ransome and was first published in 1930. It is set in the Lake District between the two World Wars. At the time Ransome had been working as a journalist with the Manchester Guardian, but decided to become a full-time author rather than go abroad as a foreign correspondent. He continued to write part-time for the press.
