About This Item

London: Frederick Warne and Co, 1912. Very good.. First edition of the first picture book in the Peter Rabbit universe to follows the villains. This was the first book in the series to be styled "The Peter Rabbit Books, Series II, New Style," featuring a slightly modified and more elaborate binding, but in the same format. Warne had suggested this book being an entirely new series, but Potter asserted her desire to keep "the Peter Rabbit book' name" (quoted in Linder). 5.25'' x 4''. Original grey boards stamped in dark green, pictorial paste-on. Color pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Potter with color frontispiece, 14 full-page color plates, and numerous black-and-white in-text images. 94 pages. Small Hereford bookseller ticket in gutter of front pastedown. Rear joint cracked after last text leaf but firm. A few spots of rubbing to boards, spine toned. Interior clean.
