About This Item
London: Tate Gallery Publishing Ltd., 2001. Large Softcover. Fine. Tate Modern is Britain's museum of international modern art, holding Britain's collection of UK art from 1900 to the present, as well as extensive collections of international modern and contemporary art. The "Handbook" was published in conjunction with and to celebrate Tate Modern's move into new, expanded and renovated space at the former Bankside Power Station in Southwark in 2000. This copy of the "Handbook" is from the 2nd edition, printed in 2001 with new photography. About 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches, 245 pages bound in light-card pictorial wrappers featuring, on the front cover, a night-time color photo of the new gallery with title in white letters across the bottom edge of the front wrapper. Spine and back cover show white lettering over a light blue background. The text is illustrated with 200 key art works from the collection presented through four themes: the body, the environment, real life and society. The text is clean, complete and unmarked, without noticeable damage or flaws. Remnants from a small price sticker on the back wrapper is the only damage on the wrappers. No bumped corners, creases, scratches or chipping. The second half of the book is an "A to Z" of 100 key artists in the collection, each represented by one or more significant works. This book is more than simply a museum guide to one of the most importatnt collections in the world but also a tool for increasing anyone's understanding of modern and contemporary art.
