About This Item

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1965. First edition. Near fine in near fine jacket.. Handsome first printing of this Cold War-inflected political thriller of a near-future Chinese-Soviet-American military conflict. Ambitious and tense novel, written and set in the 1960s, with a Black American hero negotiating international political plots alongside the civil rights struggle in his own country. By the author most notorious for fabricating an "autobiography" of Howard Hughes, for which he was denounced by the reclusive billionaire and sent (briefly) to prison; Irving later wrote about the hoax (in "The Hoax") and was featured in Orson Welles' "F for Fake." 8.25'' x 6''. Original black boards. In original unclipped ($5.95) dust jacket. Green endpapers. [12], 318 pages. Minor shelfwear.
