About This Item

MP3 Audio CD. While many may be used to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's masterful writing style from reading the Sherlock Holmes stories, the great author has many other illustrious works that not many people are still acquainted with, The Tragedy of the Korosko being one of his best known tales of courage, endurance and the ability of the most typical British and French character archetypes of the time to cope and respond in a crisis situation.

The story begins with a group of westerners ? mostly American and British tourists ? who take it upon themselves to go on a boat ride together on the Nile. A young Irish couple, a parson, an attorney and a retired British colonel are all part of the group, and a French academic is also included in the story ? one of Sir Conan Doyle's more colorful characters.

The plot takes a turn for the worse, as the group is kidnapped by Muslim raiders belonging to the Khalifa's army in Sudan. They threaten to kill the group if they do not convert to Islam, and the tension mounts, as the group hopes for rescue, while we are never certain of what will happen until the very end.

A standard Victorian novel written by an author who knows exactly how to present it and unfold the plot quite expertly, The Tragedy of Korosko was written at the time of the British Sudan Campaign, as the British army was actively engaging the local Muslims at the end of the 19th century. Published as a series, initially in the famous Strand Magazine, the story became a hit as soon as it appeared, and continues to be quite popular to this day.

If you've enjoyed Sir Conan Doyle's other publications and novels, you will definitely love reading The Tragedy of the Korosko, a skillfully penned adventure that paints a powerful picture of the differences between the West and the Muslim world, as it was perceived at the turn of the 20th century.
