Rare first edition of the French translation of this pamphlet "Killing no murder" directed against Cromwell.

Brunet, I, 189-190; Quérard, I, 37; Graesse, VI, 187; Renouard, Catalogue, n°277; Barbier, II, 7132.

In this classic of English literature, there is a remarkable definition of tyranny.

The work appeared clandestinely in 1657 under the name of William Allen and is attributed to Colonel Silas Titus.

Until his death he denied being the author, but after the Restoration he was rewarded by Charles II for having written it.

"Several bibliographers have repeated after Guy Patin that this work is not translated from English but that it was written in French by a gentleman from Nevers named de Marigny; this is an error because the Political Treatise is the translation of an English pamphlet directed against Cromwell and entitled "Killing no murder" published in 1657 under the name of William Allen, by Colonel Silas Titus. The original was reprinted with additions in 1659 and since then in 1743; it was answered under the title "Killing is murder". It is possible, however, that Marigny was the translator of this pamphlet. " (Quérard).

"Among a host of books and pamphlets published in England against Cromwell, there was none more furious than the Political Treatise by William Allen. "(J.R. Robinet).

A new edition of this work was published in 1793.

The French edition of 1980 was made on the one of 1793, for lack of being able to find the original.

"Nice copy of the original edition". (Charles Nodier about the present copy).

A superb copy in a very fine and elegant 18th century red morocco binding by Derome.

Provenance: Charles Nodier Library (Catalogue 1844, n°98), with ex-libris; the Count of Béhague (Catalogue I, n°163); Léon Techener (Catalogue II, n°102); Edouard Moura (Catalogue n°122), with ex-libris; Jacques Vieillard with ex libris.

After becoming a soldier and then traveling throughout most of Europe, Clüver in 1615 settled in Leiden, where the following year he was appointed geographus academicus ("academic geographer"), with an annual stipend. He approached geography through history and classical authors. Among his works the most important is Introductio in Universam Geographiam (1624; "Introduction to Universal Geography"). The first of its six vols deals in general with the Earth, but it is the remaining five on which his reputation rests. They contain short descriptions of countries and stress human and historical considerations. The Introductio remained a… Read More

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More

His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of… Read More
