About This Item
Paris: Masson et Cie, 1901. First edition in French. Very Good. 23 cm; x, 287, [1] pages, illustrations, graphs, and diagrams in text. In cloth over speckled paper-covered boards. Cloth-tipped corners. Minor abrasions along joints. Scattered light foxing, small paper repair in upper margin of fourth leaf. Contemporary ownership inscription and marginal notes. References (to Russian edition of 1897): Garrison-Morton 1022, Grolier Science One Hundred 83; PMM 385; Norman 1664.
Pavlov's greatest work, first published in Russian, contained his monumental researches on the physiology of digestion ("perhaps the greatest contribution to our knowledge" of this science -- Garrison-Morton, 1022). It introduced the concept of the "conditioned reflex," thus laying out the foundation of behavioral psychology. This first French edition includes the entire contents of both the Russian edition of 1897 and the expanded German edition of 1898, plus the first printing of the "Neuvième leçon,: which, as Pavlov says in the preface, presents "all the experimental facts" and "the results of the researches pursued in my laboratory until this time." Pavlov was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1904.

About Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio
Rodger Friedman Rare Book Studio owes its name and its inspiration to the traditional Italian studio bibliografico. These small antiquarian bookshops, typically run by individuals who combine deep scholarship with a love of the printed object, remind us that underlying the words "study" and "studio" is the Latin term for zeal and devotion, studium. Since 1993, my goal has been to match discerning collectors with extraordinary books and manuscripts.
