Illustrated with mono printed examples of ornamental borders and panels on both sets of endpapers and from pages 5 to 67. These are followed by 19 pages of various coloured paper which have been printed with colour pattern. A beautiful book in fine condition in the publishers red cloth with gilt lettering and decorations to the spine and front board. In an early, possibly original, plain glassine wrapper which is a bit torn and creased but has done its job of protecting the book.

The Knight in the Panther's Skin is an unequivocal work by medieval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, this translation by Marjory Waldrop was the first prose translation in the English language. This copy bound in a unique copper relief casing featuring a traditional Georgian portrait to the front with a bold pattern and Georgian script to the rear board.
A prolific translator, Waldrop travelled to Georgia in the late 1800s when it was still part of Imperial Russia, and published three English translations of Georgian titles in the following five years. The Knight in the Panther's Skin was the fourth and final translation, but was only published in 1912 three years after her death. Born in 1838 in Dunfermline, Scotland, he moved to Edinburgh, beginning to exhibit works at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1857, and then to London. Though he worked variously as a painter, sculptor and stained glass designer, John Lawson is best remembered as an illustrator of books and periodicals. His early work relates to those by his fellow Scotsman, Joseph Noel Paton, who is likely to have been a close friend. However, his later colour plates reveal his ability to adapt to a new market for popular children's books and annuals, and so work alongside his eldest daughter, Lizzie Mack.
