Large octavo, original yellow cloth, with copper casings fastened over both boards, designed by Koba Gouruli. The Knight in the Panther's Skin is an unequivocal work by medieval Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli, this translation by Marjory Waldrop was the first prose translation in the English language. This copy bound in a unique copper relief casing featuring a traditional Georgian portrait to the front with a bold pattern and Georgian script to the rear board.
A prolific translator, Waldrop travelled to Georgia in the late 1800s when it was still part of Imperial Russia, and published three English translations of Georgian titles in the following five years. The Knight in the Panther's Skin was the fourth and final translation, but was only published in 1912 three years after her death. Born in 1838 in Dunfermline, Scotland, he moved to Edinburgh, beginning to exhibit works at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1857, and then to London. Though he worked variously as a painter, sculptor and stained glass designer, John Lawson is best remembered as an illustrator of books and periodicals. His early work relates to those by his fellow Scotsman, Joseph Noel Paton, who is likely to have been a close friend. However, his later colour plates reveal his ability to adapt to a new market for popular children's books and annuals, and so work alongside his eldest daughter, Lizzie Mack. His known contributions include: Stories Told to a Child by the author of 'Studies for Stories' (illus. with…

Description:
Austin: Texas Writers Project, 2000. Original . Broadside. FINE. 24 x 36 inches, printed on high quality coated stock with metalic ink. Shipped- rolled in heavy tube. This fabulous poster was created especially for the featured author of Texas Writers Month in 2000 held in Austin, Texas by graphic designer Marc English. It is printed on heavy high quality coated stock in metalic inks: silver and bronze and laid over a duotone photograph of the rugged Big Bend country of West Texas. The poster quotes a long scene from McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN with drops of bronze red blood for emphasis. This is a stunning visual and carries the impact of the original text depicting a scene of horror as the savages line up on horseback along the ridge their glass beads and painted bodies caught forever in the sun's hot glare as they anticipate the massacre that would follow. Only McCarthy could make this scene so vivid you might have to put the book down and never finish it.
