Illustrated with plates. viii, 303 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. First American edition of the classic tale by Jules, Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (originally published in Paris, 1870-1). Printed from the plates of the Sampson Low London edition, it's believed that the majority of the copies were destroyed in the Great Boston Fire on November 9, 1872, and only few copies survived. It was quickly followed by an edition by George M. Smith, with a different vignette in the upper cover design. Myers p. 63
