by Beretario, Sebastian; Anchieta, Joseph

  • Used

A fundamental and early work on Brazilian Jesuit Missions; one of the first Jesuit Priests to work in Brazil. 1617. Cologne. Johannes Kinchium. In 12vo (131 mm x 75 mm). 1 [blank] + 2 ff. + 427 [428] + 1 ff. + 1 [blank]. Contemporary or near contemporary vellum, ties as fragments, gently soiled. A fine copy, some leaves browned as expected.

Although printed the same year as the Lyon edition, Leclerc states that this is the second edition; it could also be a second issue. Father Anchieta (1534 – 1597) was a Canarian Jesuit Priest and writer; after short studies in Portugal, and being only 19 years old, he was selected to travel to the Jesuit missions in Brazil, accompanying Duarte da Costa. Before making shore they shipwrecked, but still Anchieta was able to make shore at Sao Vicente, which allowed him to have contact with the Tapuia Indians who were natives of the region. Furthermore, he is considered as one of the founders of Sao Paulo, in 1554, and Rio de Janeiro, in 1565 (after the defeat of the French settlers). His labor in the catechesis and conversion of the Indians into the Catholic faith –along with Nóbrega-, was crucial to the establishment of a colonial settlement in the country. The work is “based on the manuscript by Father Pedro Rodrigues, visiting Father to Angola and Brazil. This manuscript was unpublished at the time, but several copies were in circulation and served as the basis for all the biographies of Anchieta.” Borba de Moraes, 99. Rodriguez, 379. Leclerc, 1558.
