About This Item

Paris, Pélicier et Nepveu, 1821. 8vo. Contemporary French black polished calf-backed marbled boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, sprinkled edges; pp. [4] xii, 506, [2], with frontispiece and nine plates in charcoal lithography, all tissue guards preserved, large folding engraved map (c. 94 x 42 cm); apart from light wear to extremities and occasional negligible spotting, a clean and fresh copy, unopened since binding prior to collating. First edition. This is a detailed travelogue with much focus on the military strength, road infrastructure and economic resources of the region between Istanbul and Tehran, ranging from the Nothern Caucasus, south to Mossul and Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, written by Napoleon's personal interpreter of Arabic from 1799 onwards. Jaubert had been dispatched by the French government to broker an alliance with Fa'th Ali Shah, in order to assess the feasibility of an assault on British India. Jaubert and his companions, however, were captured by the Persian authorities and incarcerated fora month, until after the Shah's death, they were freed and continued travelling via Kurdistan, Van, Khoy, Tabriz, Ardabil, Soltaniyeh and Qazvin to Teheran. They returned overland to Istanbul. A number of remote places are here described for the first time by a European. Atabey 613; Weber 102; Wilson p. 109; not in Blackmer.
