About This Item
Paris, 1833. First edition. Very good overall. This is an india paper proof laid down on paper that retains the blind stamp of the expedition just below the proof. The lithograph view of the Francis River in the south west of Western Australia is plate 14 from the official report of the voyage, "Voyage de la Corvette L'Astrolabe..." under the command of Jules Dumont D'Urville. A pair of men stand onshore of the river with their boat, one wearing a blue coat, one red. Black swans are seen in the distance. The Astrolabe stayed in the Albany area for 18 days, assessing the Sound's suitability as a port and thought it would be a good place to establish a colony, and Dumont D'Urville was surprised that the British had not already done so. Printed on india paper with small margins and laid down onto rag paper with large margins. 11 5/8 x 9 358" including rule lines and captions. Later tasteful hand color. Slight minor rubbing through a couple of spots in the top margin.
