About This Item

1960. Tübingen, J.C.B. Mohr, 1960. Lex 8vo. Uncut and partly unopened. Original self-wrappers. A few tears to extremities, but otherwise an excellent copy. A few light pencil annotations to a few leaves in the beginning, otherwise internally very nice, clan, and fresh. Old owner's name and a marginal stain to half-title. XVII, (1), 486, (2) pp. The first edition of Gadamer's main work, "Truth and Method", the aim of which is to uncover the nature of human understanding. A main work of philosophical hermeneutics as well as 20th century continental philosophy in general.Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900 - 2002) is the decisive figure in the development of twentieth century hermeneutics. He is without doubt one of the most important thinkers of the twentieth century, and he has had an enormous impact on philosophy, theology and aesthetics, acquiring the greatest respect and reputation in Germany and the rest of Europe, which has been far from restricted to academic circles. "Truth and Method" is intended to be a description of what we consciously or unconsciously always do, when we interpret things. "My real concern was and is philosophic: not what we do or what we ought to do, but what happens to us over and above our wanting and doing" ("Truth and Method", 2nd ed. London, 1989 p. xxviii). The work has been published twice in English and is considered inevitable in the study of hermeneutics.
