London: Cassell, 1948. First. Very Good+/Very Good-. A complete set of first editions of all of Churchill's speeches after WWII These volumes are scarcer than his War Speeches, since they were published in smaller quantities These are all the "true first" British editions US editions were published for the first four, but there was no US edition of the last, The Unwritten Alliance
All DJ's are in protective mylar covers
The Set includes:
1 The Sinews of Peace - 1948, 256 pp Book is near fine in orange cloth, with just slight bumping on spine ends and slight darkening of endpapers Unclipped DJ is very good, with just slight chipping at spine ends and slight foxing on rear [Woods A124]
2 Europe Unite - 1950, 506 pp Book is very good in green cloth, with front hinge cracked and very slight bumping at spine ends and top corner Unclipped DJ is very good, with chipping at spine ends, and minor foxing on rear and flaps [Woods A128]
3 In the Balance, 1951, 406 pp Book is near fine in blue cloth, with just slight bumping on spine ends Cipped DJ is very good, with minor chipping at spine ends, and slight foxing on rear [Woods A130]
4 Stemming the Tide, 1953, 379 pp Book is near fine in maroon cloth, with minor bumping at bottom spine end and slight scuffing on front lower edge Clipped DJ is the second state Only 5,500 copies were printed by the publisher in total, but not all were issued in 1953 The books released in 1953 had a DJ, which kept the same bordered pattern as the other volumes The remaining books were released in 1961 with this slightly different DJ, without the oak leaf colored border The books themselves are identical, with the DJ variant being the only distinguishing difference (Note: I am also listing another complete set of the post-war speeches that includes the first state DJ) [Woods A137]
5 The Unwritten Alliance, 1961, 332 pp Book is near fine in red cloth, with just slight bumping at spine ends and slight fading at top of spine Clipped DJ is very good, with some chipping at spine ends and some scuffing and foxing, particularly on rear It should be noted that the quality of the DJ's for this book was not as good as for the other volumes, and thus jackets for this edition more frequently show scuffing and wear This was Churchill's last book published during his lifetime [Woods A142]

Note: will ship within the US for the standard shipping, but any additional shipping will be charged for buyers outside the US..

xxxiii+270+[2]+15+[1]+48+xix+[1] pages 14 of 18 engraved plates, maps (many folding) and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8 1/4") in original leather binding. First edition.Richard Owen Cambridge was a British poet. He was educated at Eton and at St John's College, Oxford. Leaving the university without taking a degree, he took up residence at Lincolns Inn in 1737. Four years later he married, and went to live at his country seat of Whitminster, Gloucestershire. In 1751 he removed to Twickenham, where he enjoyed the society of many notable persons. Horace Walpole in his letters makes many jesting allusions to Cambridge in the character of news-monger. His chief work is the Scribleriad (1751), a mock epic poem, the hero of which is the Martinus Scriblerus of Alexander Pope, John Arbuthnot and Jonathan Swift. The poem is preceded by a dissertation on the mock heroic, in which he avows Cervantes as his master. The satire shows considerable learning, and was eagerly read by literary people; but it never became… Read More

Description:
London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes, of which this is Part II, include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. hough the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. Description:
London: London: printed for J. Nourse, at the Lamb, opposite Katherine-Street, in the Strand, 1746. 1st Edition . Full leather. Very Good. First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. Description:
London (and New York): Hodder and Stoughton (for George H. Doran Company), 1908. First U.S. edition, only printing, first state. Hardcover. This is the U.S. first edition, more humble in appearance than its British counterpart, but also far more scarce. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs ostensibly taken by the author. This copy is the elusive first state of the first American edition. The first U.S. edition is far scarcer than the British first edition, with only 1400 copies sold (encompassing all three states), in contrast to more than 8000 copies of the more frequently seen British edition. The U.S. first edition was made from British first edition sheets bound in a plain coarse dark red cloth with the same gilt titles on the spine as used on the British. Unlike its… Read More

From the library of Zelia Nuttal and George M Foster. Limited to 500 copies. First edition. Cervantes de Salazar was one of the principal chroniclers who gathered data on the history and ethnography of Mexico. His most important book Cronica de la Nueva Espana (Chronicle of New Spain), written at the command of City Council. The manuscript of this work was sent by the author to Spain in 1567 with a request for the post of royal chronicler. This manuscript was uncovered in the early 1900s uncatalogued in the National Library of Madrid as an anonymous manuscript. the first volume was published in 1914 and the second and third in 1936. The Chronicle is fragmentary since the first part, which was to include the period up to the conquest of Yucatan, either was never written or was lost; and the second part, which was to be a history of the conquest,… Read More

Sewn binding with matching paper covers. In 11.75 x 9" lidded aluminum box with embossed titles. Signed and dated by artist. This is the story of Rudolph Brazda, who when he died in 2011 was the last known survivor of the Nazi concentration camps who had been incarcerated because he was a homosexual. Forced wear a pink triangle, Brazda survived 3 years in Buchenwald. After his liberation, Brazda lived in Alsace until his death. Morin overlays Brazda's story with the German folktale of The White Maiden. Jeff Morin, Colophon: "The White Maiden is the tale of a hunter who wishes for the ancient wines of the cellars at Thurnberg in a moment of great thirst. His wish is granted by the White Maiden but, as a result of drinking his wine, she forever plagues him with a sense of wanting, an inability to take… Read More

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the Second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches compmrise only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1948-1953. First American Edition Set (Cohen A241.2-A264.2) (Woods A124-A137). Hardcover in Dust Jackets. Very Good. 8vo . This is a very good First American edition set of the four postwar speech volumes, as published in the U.S.; here in the rare original dust jackets. THE SINEWS OF PEACE and STEMMING THE TIDE jackets are price-clipped; EUROPE UNITE and IN THE BALANCE jackets are unclipped. All four jackets are very modestly edge-chipped, with fractional losses at the spine heads. While bright and unfaded on the front and rear jacket faces, the spine of IN THE BALANCE is significantly sun-faded. The cloth on EUROPE UNITE has very faintly faded along the spine as well. The contents are fine, with a handsome former-owner’s bookplate on each front pastedown. A lovely set overall.

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
