New York: Barnes & Noble, Inc, 1968. Hardcover. VG-/VG- light wear. 3 vols., Blue-gray cloth, gilt letters on spines, gray-er & illus. dust jackets, 885 pp., 758 BW illus., 5 color plates. Covers the whole history of the genre in England, "from the beginnings to the end of the nineteenth century." (dj) Volume one: The Eighteenth Century. Volume two: The Romantic Period. Volume three: The Victorian Period. Was the magnum opus for compiler Martin Hardie (1875-1952), who passed away before its publication. Additional editing was provided by Dudley Snelgrove, Jonathan Mayne, and Basil Taylor. A nice resource to be able to consult on a regular basis, and one that may be difficult to find as a set.
