New York: The Viking Press, 1947. Hardcover. 8vo. Terra cotta cloth with gilt lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 312pp. Very good/very good. Mild jacket edgewear, with chip at tail of spine and old mends on jacket verso. Tight, clean, attractive first edition. Superb jacket front panel graphics. Ownership signature, dated March 1947, of John H. Mulliken Jr. (1922-2004), a Dartmouth graduate and WW2 tank commander with literary aspirations (a letter with writing advice from legendary editor Max Perkins to young G.I. Mulliken appears in "The Letters of Maxwell E. Perkins") who became a journalist for "Life" and "Time" magazines among others then Deputy Press Secretary for Vice President Nelson Rockefeller in the mid-1970s; above this his future wife Barbara Hanschen from whom he got the book signs and dates it February 1947, the month of its publication.
