Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs & Co., (1920). Large 8vo., 604pp., top-edge gilt. Limited Edition, 91/100 signed by the illustrator. Publisher's gilt-lettered dark blue cloth with color pictorial label to front cover. Illustrated with color endpapers, color plates, and illustrations; all by Thornton Oakley. Binding in lovely condition; 1922 pencil Xmas gift inscription; internally some faint foxing scattered throughout; light offsetting near plates; near fine.
A lavishly-illustrated edition of Kinglsey's Westward Ho. American artist Thornton Oakley (1881-1953) was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was familiar with its railroad factories and steel mills. After studying in Wilmington, Delaware with illustrator and painter Howard Pyle, Oakley began his own career as an illustrator.
