London: Macmillan and Co.,, 1908. An attractive prize binding, on Kingsley's historical novel Westward Ho! (1855), based on the life of Amyas Preston (d. 1609), a privateer who sailed to the New World and who led the Preston-Somers expedition. Octavo (188 x 125 mm). Contemporary green calf prize binding, red label to spine lettered in gilt, raised bands ruled in blind, compartments decorated in gilt, gilt arms of the Haberdashers' (Aske's) Hatcham School to front cover, covers with two gilt fillets, turn-ins blind tooled, marbled endpapers and edges. Portrait frontispiece. Spine sunned, light rubbing to joints, slight rubbing and wear to covers, internally bright. A very good copy indeed.
