New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1908. First American edition. Hardcover. Very good. 301 pp. Octavo. [19.5 cm]. Light green cloth over boards with gilt stamped title and gilt stamped rectangular frame on front board. Top edge gilt. Deckled edges. With a black and white frontispiece illustration picturing children in Eden, protected by a tissue guard. Spine is heavily sunned, but title remains bright. Edges of boards sunned, most noticeably at top edge of front board. Several minor stains to front board. Thin loss from fore edge margin of page 7-8. There are two bookplates on the front end paper: one library bookplate and a previous owner's decorative book plate. First American edition of the beloved children's novel written by Kenneth Grahame. Grahame conceived the premise for "Wind in the Willows" through telling nightly bed time stories to his son Alastair, who was partially blind and would struggle with health issues throughout his life, and who would later commit suicide at the young age of nineteen. Heartbroken, Kenneth Grahame would not write another notable work before his death in 1932.
