About This Item

At the back of the book is an Appendix which contains "The Man Without a Country - From the Ingham Papers." There are two pages of illustrated advertisements at the back.

Condition:
Some age toning to the covers and spine; sharp corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is an insignificant partial crack at the front hinge between the frontispiece and title page (despite the partial crack, the front cover is firmly attached and not shaky). The pages are mostly clean with only some stains to 6 consecutive pages at the front, and at the lower-outer corner of page 18. There is a name/date (1898) written in pen on the front end paper. The outer corners of the rear end paper and pastedown are tanned in the shape of a triangle. The first advertisement page has a thin, light stain along the inner edge. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.

Synopsis

The Man Without A Country, written by Edward Everett Hale in 1863 and originally published in Ticknor and Fields’ magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, follows American Army lieutenant Philip Nolan. He renounced America during a treason trial and was subsequently sentenced to traverse the seas for the remainder of his life with no news of his country. The Man Without A Country  was first published in the December 1863 issue of  Ticknor and Fields' magazine: The Atlantic Monthly, Devoted to Literature, Art and Politics,  number 74 of Volume XII (pg 665-796 with the following two pages having an index for Volume XII). Only in the index is Hale attributed for the short story.
