About This Item

Chicago: Reilly & Lee, 1940. Fine in very good plus jacket.. First edition, first issue of the first Oz book both written and illustrated by Neill, who illustrated every Oz book from 1904 to 1942. After Baum had a falling out with W.W. Denslow, the illustrator of THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ, John R. Neill took on the job of illustrating the second Oz book, THE MARVELOUS LAND OF OZ (1904). He continued illustrating the series beyond Baum's death, providing the legitimacy of continuity for Ruth Plumly Thompson, Baum's successor. WONDER CITY OF OZ is the first of three Oz books written (and illustrated) by Neill after Thompson stepped back; his authored works are considered part of the Famous Forty, the Oz canon. Original light blue cloth, pictorial paste-on. In original unclipped ($1.50) color pictorial dust jacket, listing titles through this title. 318 pages. Book beautiful. Jacket bright with a few neat tape repairs on verso.
