About This Item

New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1881. Very good plus.. Uncommonly nice copy of the first edition of Pyle's first commissioned book, with Pyle's own bookplate. This copy contains Pyle's bookplate on the front pastedown, although individual examples of his bookplate are known to have circulated via his widow after Pyle's death. A poorly produced book, Pyle's first book commission rarely survives today in collectible condition. Already scarce, copies on the market tend to appear with significant condition flaws. This is among the cleaner copies we have handled. 10'' x 9.25''. Original pictorial boards. Patterned endpapers. Illustrated by Pyle with 8 full-page color illustrations and extensive images in blue alongside text. 31, [1] pages. Illustrated bookplate reading "ITA PRIMO ITA SEMPER / EX LIBRIS HOWARD PYLE" (matching examples at University of Delaware and the Brandywine Museum of Art) on front pastedown. Ink presentation inscription to front fly leaf. Boards with wear at corners and particularly spine, with a small dampstain spot near spine head, light soiling. Hinges firm, no repairs, interior clean.
