About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. Hardback. Fine/Original publisher's box. N. C. Wyeth. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940. Scribner's Classic Edition together with publisher's original decorative box. Book condition: fine. A very clean and sound copy which has obviously benefited from being kept in its original box. Black cloth covered boards with pictorial on-lay to front and gilt titles to spine. Top edge of text block tinted pale orange. Original decorative box in good condition - it has lost one long edge of top but ia still robust. Pictorial on-lay to front and title with $2.50 price label to lower edge. Base of box very sound with some fade/discolouration to decorative paper and a little rubbing here and there. Top of box, as mentioned, has lost one long side but the remaining structure is sound. Some attrition to decorative background paper but front pictorial has only very minor rubbing to a few points around its black border. This edition has twelve colour plates by N. C. Wyeth plus the decorative endpapers and the pictorial on-lays to the front board and to the top of the box. Very rare to find one of the original decorative boxes - especially in such robust condition.

Synopsis

The Yearling is a 1938 novel written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel in 1939. Rawlings's editor was Maxwell Perkins, who also worked with F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and other literary luminaries. She had submitted several projects to Perkins for his review, and he rejected them all. He instructed her to write about what she knew from her own life, and the result of her taking his advice was The Yearling.
