About This Item
"THE KNIGHTLY SOLDIER" - A Biography of Major Henry Ward Camp; Tenth Conn. Vols. by H. Clay Trumbull. 1865 1st Edition; Nichols and Noyes; Boston. "A Record of College, Field, and Prison." The book contains a frontispiece portrait of Camp, as well as 4 illustrated plates; also included is the "Description of Plates" sheet.
From the Preface:
"This book is not an attempt to prove that Henry Camp was brave, accomplished, and upright in all the course of his beautiful life here, or that he was fully prepared for the future to which God so early called him. It simply shows him as he was, grouping the memorial sketches of those who knew him best in the various relations of student, soldier, and Christian; with copious extracts from his own letters, written in all the freedom of family correspondence."
The chapter are as follows:
I. Childhood and Schooldays
II. College Life
III. Teacher - Law-Student - Soldier
IV. Roanoke and Newberne
V. Camp-Life and Campaigning
VI. The First Charleston Expedition
VII. James Island and Fort Wagner
VIII. Charleston and Columbia - Prison Life and Escape
IX. Libby Prison - Home - Camp Parole
X. Campaigning with the Army of the James
XI. Deep Bottom - Strawberry Plains - Deep Run
XII. In the Petersburg Trenches
XIII. Life and Death before Richmond
XIV. Memorial Tributes
Condition:
Clean covers and spine; fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine; cloth tear at the lower-right corner tip of the front cover. Tight binding. 1.5" crack at the top of the rear hinge between the end paper and pastedown. The "Description of Plates" page is included (unattached, though I am unsure if was issued as being attached). The book "leans" to the right a bit. The text pages are in very good condition - mostly clean and white with only some foxing to the frontispiece (both sides), the tissue paper over the frontispiece, and the title page; inscription written in pen dated 1865 on front end paper...no other writing found.
