About This Item
Michael Joseph, London, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Hedley, Peter & Aynsley, Cyril. List of illustrations. The text is illustrated with black and white photographs. Blue coloured boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Plaintext dustwrapper with white and blue coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. On 21 February 1967, the Daily Express newspaper published a front-page story, stating that their Defence correspondent, Chapman Pincher, had some of his outgoing private cables scrutinised by authorities. This claim created an uproar in the halls of government; and, the Prime Minister, Mr Harold Wilson, immediately challenged the accuracy of the article; but, more importantly " ... accused the Daily Express of having breached two D- notices, a device to alert editors on certain matters of security." --- from the front fold over panel blurb. A major political row ensued  involving not only the government and the opposition but the journalist forces in Fleet Street. This book collates, chronologically, the scandal as it unfolded  but it draws no conclusions, excepting to highlight mutual distrust and suspicion between government and newspapers. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Light age toning of the textblock edges with scattered foxing. Age toning of the pages with an occasional foxing spot. Previous owners name to the top right-hand corner of the free front end page and on the top of page 33. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower right-hand corner of the front paste-down; this has ghosted on to the free front end page. Offset tanning to the end pages. Chipping to the dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. Heavy rubbing either side of the backstrip and fold over creases with lighter rubbing of the book panels. Some tears to the top dustwrapper edge with associated creasing, with some creasing of the lower edge foxing and light browning of the verso. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [4], 5 - 144 pages,. Dust Jacket price-clipped. Please refer to accompanying picture (s). Illustrator: Hedley, Peter & Aynsley, Cyril. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo.
