About This Item
[Philadelphia and New York: Danforth, Bald & Co., c.1850-1853]. Engraving. 3⅝ x 11⅝ inches. Translucent bank note paper. Two vignette illustrations; certificate and accompanying stub are blank; binder's stab holes visible in left margin.
Intact 19th-century certificate of deposit from the Bank of Wilmington and Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware. The certificate was engraved by Danforth, Bald. & Co. and includes two patriotic vignettes: an American sailor in uniform, arm resting on a capstan, and a merchant ship in full-sail, the Flag of the United States unfurled. Interestingly, it retains its original engraved stub for recording the details of the certificate's transaction. An excellent example.
Ref. American Bank Note Co and Predecessor Companies accessed online: "Danforth, Bald & Co. formed in 1850 from Danforth & Hufty; part became Danforth Wright & Co. in 1853; part became Bald, Cousland & Co.in 1853."
